Zone classifications—unrestricted, semi-restricted, and restricted—describe where street clothes, surgical attire, and masks apply as you move from the preoperative area toward the operating room. For the sterile field itself, only sterile-to-sterile contact preserves sterility, package integrity and indicator results determine whether contents are usable, and drape edges and anything below table level are treated as unsterile.

If any step is out of order or missing a role, rewrite the sequence. Speed of recall matters here because, in practice and in scenario questions alike, the correct order is the whole point.

Positioning Choices That Prevent Nerve and Skin Injury

Positioning decisions match each surgical position to its known pressure and stretch risks, then to the protective devices applied before incision. Build a position-to-risk-to-intervention chain for supine, Trendelenburg, lithotomy, prone, and lateral positions.

The goal is a defensible narrative: any reviewer reading your record should be able to reconstruct what safety verifications occurred, what interventions were performed, and how the patient responded, without needing your memory to fill gaps.

Sequence study by system, not by question volume: credential fit, asepsis, counts, positioning, anesthesia emergencies, documentation, then mixed practice. Close with a rubric that scores the speed and accuracy of your role decisions, not just totals.

A six-week adaptable sequence works well and can compress or stretch to fit your schedule. Weeks one and two: confirm your credential fit from the table above and build the sterile-clean-unsterile and zone vocabulary chains.
